This led to a very large Amhara population being blamed for a minority. This also inflated the Amhara population as people wanted to claim this identity to gain access to its perks. People such as Oromo took advantage of accepting the new Ethiopian nationality without having the historical rights to back it. Under Menelik's Ethiopia is for all policy it disrupted the status quo which at the time had separate mini kingdoms. Menelik and his successor severely weakened indigenous states opening the door for Oromo to claim most of Ethiopia. Yohannes would probably not allow Europeans to manipulate Ethiopia's internal politics when they are responsible for turning Ethiopia into the only african island surrounded by european supremacy. Ethiopia could've avoided the Iyasu fiasco with Yohannes, this is not to say Muslim-Christian relations in Ethiopia would be at an all time low, perhaps it would be at its best. Guarding ones identity is not racism or xenophobia because if this is not done all sides suffer. This is where Menelik's weakness is shown, this might have something to do with Shewa once being diverse and ruled by muslims (see sultanate of shewa). Unlike Menelik, I doubt Yohannes would allow Catholics to take over Eritrea. Yohannes is portrayed as a cruel leader and very religious as well as anti muslim however one can say he was protecting the identity of Ethiopia which is orthodox christian. Some of the best roads were constructed even during the italian occupation of Ethiopia (see dire dawa route) This is true as Haile Selassie put Ethiopia into the dark ages. It was however too late, the Eritreans after years of colonialism felt Ethiopia is a backward state and they would be better off under Italy or independent. ![]() In battle of Adwa, europeans were helping Menelik because Italy was erratic they knew after Ethiopia was conquered, Italy would attack the british and french colonies, and this would eventually lead to large wae like WW2 where the Allies gave Eritrea to Ethiopia for being submissive to their occupation of djibouti and Somalia. Menelik should of went to attack Italy to obtain access to the ports. ![]() During Menelik's era these routes to the sea were controlled by Europeans who sympathized with Menelik, Ethiopia is a large country that shouldnt be land locked. I understand Sarsa refusing to confront Ottomans on the port because he was surrounded by Muslim states but this was not the case under Menelik. Menelik like his predecessor Sarsa Dengel was fine with being pushed inland. The Italians would of been confronted sooner by Yohannes in Eritrea hence there wouldnt be a battle of Adwa necessary. Judging between these two leaders I would assume Yohannes would of been a better leader.
